How Guna Milan works
Ashtakoot matching compares the Moon sign and birth nakshatra of the boy and the girl in eight checks (kootas). Together they carry 36 gunas: Varna 1, Vashya 2, Tara 3, Yoni 4, Graha Maitri 5, Gana 6, Bhakoot 7 and Nadi 8.
We grade the total with Drik Panchang’s rules: when Bhakoot is favourable, 31–36 is excellent, 21–30 very good, 17–20 middling and 16 or less not recommended. When Bhakoot is unfavourable the bar is higher, and a Nadi dosha outweighs any total.
Our matching tables
Published sources do not all use the same tables, so we state ours: Varna, Vashya, Tara, Gana and Graha Maitri follow Drik Panchang and OnlineJyotish; Yoni uses the classical table whose zero scores match the seven sworn-enemy pairs of Muhurta Chintamani. We tested every one of the 11,664 possible birth-star pairs.
Frequently asked questions
How many gunas are needed for marriage?
18 of 36 is the traditional minimum. Drik Panchang also looks at Bhakoot and Nadi: with a Nadi dosha, even a high total is not recommended by its rule.
What is Nadi dosha?
Nadi dosha means the boy and the girl were born in nakshatras of the same nadi (Adi, Madhya or Antya). Nadi carries the most points, 8, so this koota then scores zero.
Does kundli matching check Manglik dosha?
Yes. We show the Manglik level of both people. When both are Manglik, the tradition considers the dosha balanced.
Can I match by name only?
Guna Milan needs the Moon sign and nakshatra, which come from the date, time and place of birth. Matching by date of birth gives the real result.
