To make a kundli online you need three details: your date of birth, your time of birth and your place of birth. Enter them in a free kundli maker, press the button, and the Janam Kundli appears in a few seconds with your Lagna chart, the nine planets, your nakshatra and your dasha periods. This guide walks through every step and explains what each detail does to the chart.
What do you need to make a kundli?
A kundli is a map of the sky at the exact minute and place you were born. The date fixes where the slow planets were, the time fixes which sign was rising in the east (the Lagna), and the place gives the latitude, longitude and time zone that turn your clock time into the true moment of birth.
| Detail | Why it matters | If you do not know it exactly |
|---|---|---|
| Date of birth | Places all nine grahas in their signs and nakshatras | A wrong date changes almost everything |
| Time of birth | Fixes the Lagna, the 12 houses and the dasha dates | The Moon sign usually stays right; the Lagna and houses do not |
| Place of birth | Gives latitude, longitude and the time zone | A nearby town of the same district gives almost the same chart |
| Name (optional) | Printed on the kundli for your records | Not used in any calculation |
The name is only a label. It does not change a single planet position, which is why a real kundli cannot be made from a name alone. We explain that in kundli by name.
How to make your kundli online, step by step
Making your kundli on the free kundli maker takes about a minute:
- Enter your date of birth. Use the date on your birth certificate.
- Enter your time of birth. Use the time written on the birth certificate or the hospital record. If you only know “morning” or “around 10”, enter the closest time you know and read the section on birth time below.
- Type your birth place and pick it from the list. The list holds about 7,500 places: 3,502 in India and 4,001 cities around the world. Picking a place fills in the latitude, longitude and time zone for you.
- Press “Make my Kundli”. The full Janam Kundli appears on the same page.
- Switch the chart style if you like. Every chart can be shown in North Indian or South Indian style.
If your birth place is not in the list, open Advanced and type the latitude and longitude yourself. The same Advanced box also lets you choose an old Indian clock, which matters for births in some years (see the mistakes section below).
How do you make a kundli on your phone?
You make it the same way as on a computer, in the phone’s browser. Open the free kundli maker in Chrome or Safari, fill in the date, time and place of birth, and press Make my Kundli. The page is built for phone screens too, so you do not need to install a kundli app. To keep a copy on the phone, press Save as PDF / Print under the result; the kundli PDF guide shows the steps for Android and iPhone.
How is a kundli calculated?
The engine works out where the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu stood at your moment of birth, then shifts every position into the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the standard of the Indian Astronomical Ephemeris. The sign rising on the eastern horizon becomes the Lagna, the first house.
From there, three more things follow:
- Houses: each of the 12 signs from the Lagna onward becomes one house (whole-sign houses).
- Nakshatra: the Moon’s exact degree decides your birth star and its pada.
- Dasha: the Vimshottari dasha timetable starts from how far the Moon had moved through its nakshatra. That is why a small change in birth time moves your dasha dates.
Can you make a kundli by hand?
Yes. Before computers, astrologers made every kundli by hand with two printed tools: an ephemeris, which is a book of planet positions for every day, and a table of ascendants for the latitude of the birth place. The method has five steps:
- Convert the birth time into the local sidereal time (star time) of the birth place.
- Read the rising sign and degree for that sidereal time and latitude from the table. This is the Lagna.
- Copy the planet positions for the birth date from the ephemeris and adjust them for the hour of birth. The Moon needs the most care, because it moves about 13 degrees a day.
- Make sure every position is sidereal. If the book gives Western (tropical) positions, subtract the ayanamsa.
- Place each planet in its house, find the Moon’s nakshatra, and work out the dasha balance from the Moon’s degree.
Each step is simple, but the arithmetic is long, and one slip moves a planet or the Lagna. A kundli maker runs the same steps in a fraction of a second.
What does a free kundli include?
A complete free kundli on this site shows:
- Lagna (D1) and Navamsa (D9) charts in North and South Indian style
- the sign, degree, nakshatra, pada and house of all nine planets, with retrograde, combust and dignity notes
- the Panchang at birth: tithi, day, nakshatra, yoga and karana
- Vimshottari mahadasha and antardasha dates, with the period running today
- Manglik dosha checked from the Lagna, the Moon and Venus, plus Kaal Sarp dosha and Sade Sati status
What to look at first in your new kundli
Start with the four boxes at the top of the result: your Lagna, your Moon sign (Rashi), your birth nakshatra with its pada, and your Sun sign. Next come the Lagna and Navamsa charts and the table of the nine planets, which shows the house each planet sits in. Further down, the Vimshottari dasha table marks the period that is Running now, and near the end the dosha section shows the Manglik, Kaal Sarp and Sade Sati checks in one place.
How accurate is an online kundli?
An online kundli is as accurate as two things: the maths of the software and the birth details you enter. On the maths side, our engine was tested against Swiss Ephemeris, the reference used by most astrology software, on 404 birth moments from 1900 to 2050. The largest difference was 11 arcseconds for the Moon and 14 arcseconds for any planet. One arcsecond is 1/3600 of a degree, far too small to move a planet into another sign or nakshatra in normal cases.
On the input side, the birth time matters most. For a test birth on 15 August 1990 in Jaipur, moving the time from 10:00 to 11:00 changed the Lagna from Virgo to Libra and moved the start of the next mahadasha by 163 days. The full test is in kundli without birth time.
Can you make a kundli with only the date of birth?
You can make a partial kundli with only the date and place. The Moon sign is usually right, because the Moon spends about two and a quarter days in each sign. The Lagna, the houses and the exact dasha dates are not reliable, because the Lagna moves through all twelve signs in one day. Our guide to making a kundli without birth time shows what still works.
Common mistakes when making a kundli
Most wrong kundlis come from small input slips, not from the calculation:
- AM and PM mixed up. 7:30 in the evening is 19:30. Check the time field before you press the button.
- The wrong town with the same name. Many Indian towns share a name. The list shows the latitude and longitude next to each entry, so pick the one that matches your town.
- Old Indian clocks. India used “war time”, one hour ahead of IST, from 1941 to 1945. Our kundli maker applies it automatically for Indian places. Some older records use Bombay time or Calcutta time; choose them under Advanced if your family record says so.
- Daylight saving abroad. For births outside India, picking the city from the list applies the local clock rules of that year for you.
- The date written in a different calendar. Family records sometimes give the Hindu tithi and month instead of the English date. Convert it to the English date first.
How do you save or print your kundli?
Under your kundli, press Save as PDF / Print. The print window opens with only your kundli on the page, and you can choose Save as PDF to keep a free copy on your phone or computer. Our guide to the free kundli PDF, app or software covers the details for phones and computers.
Quick answers
Is making a kundli online free? Yes. The full kundli on this site is free, needs no sign-up, and you can make as many kundlis as you like.
Is my birth data stored? No. The free kundli is calculated inside your own browser, so the birth details you type are not sent to our server.
Which is better, North or South Indian chart? Both show the same planets in the same signs. North Indian charts keep the houses fixed with the Lagna at the top; South Indian charts keep the signs fixed. Use the one your family astrologer uses.
