Yes, you can make a kundli with only your date and place of birth, but it is a partial kundli. Your Moon sign, the signs of most planets and usually your nakshatra stay right through the day. Your Lagna, the 12 houses and the exact dasha dates do not, because they move with the clock. This guide shows exactly how much changes, using real calculations from our kundli engine.
Can you make a kundli with only the date of birth?
A kundli made from the date and place alone shows where the planets were on that day, which is enough for the Moon sign and the planet signs. It cannot show which sign was rising at birth. The rising sign, the Lagna, decides the first house and so the order of all twelve houses, which is where most readings start.
What changes during one day?
We made 24 kundlis for the same birth date and place, one for every hour of the day, with the same engine that runs the free kundli maker. The test birth: 15 August 1990, Jaipur.
| Part of the kundli | Changes during the day? | Our test result (15 Aug 1990, Jaipur) |
|---|---|---|
| Lagna (rising sign) | Yes, every two hours on average | All 12 signs appeared in one day |
| 12 houses | Yes, they follow the Lagna | Changed with every Lagna |
| Moon sign (rashi) | Rarely: the Moon stays about 2¼ days in a sign | Taurus all day |
| Nakshatra | Sometimes: about once a day | Changed once: Rohini, then Mrigashira |
| Signs of the other planets | Almost never within one day | Each planet stayed in one sign all day |
| Dasha dates | Yes, with every minute | See the next section |
The pattern is clear. The Moon sign is the most reliable thing you can know without a birth time. The Lagna is the least reliable.
How long does each Lagna last?
A Lagna lasts about two hours on average, but the signs do not all rise at the same speed. Our engine worked out the rising times for the same test day, 15 August 1990 at Jaipur, minute by minute:
| Lagna | Rising from | Until | Lasted |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gemini | 01:38 | 03:52 | 2 h 14 min |
| Cancer | 03:52 | 06:11 | 2 h 19 min |
| Leo | 06:11 | 08:26 | 2 h 15 min |
| Virgo | 08:26 | 10:41 | 2 h 15 min |
| Libra | 10:41 | 12:59 | 2 h 18 min |
| Scorpio | 12:59 | 15:16 | 2 h 17 min |
| Sagittarius | 15:16 | 17:21 | 2 h 05 min |
| Capricorn | 17:21 | 19:05 | 1 h 44 min |
| Aquarius | 19:05 | 20:34 | 1 h 29 min |
| Pisces | 20:34 | 22:01 | 1 h 27 min |
| Aries | 22:01 | 23:38 | 1 h 37 min |
| Taurus | 23:38 | 01:34 (next day) | 1 h 56 min |
All times are Indian Standard Time. Cancer rose for 2 hours 19 minutes, Pisces for only 1 hour 27 minutes. On this date the fast-rising signs, Capricorn to Aries, came up in the evening, so an evening birth time needed the most care. The timetable moves about four minutes earlier each day and changes with the latitude of the birth place, so every birth day has its own.
A rough time is often enough to fix the Lagna. On the test day, a birth anywhere between 08:30 and 10:30 has a Virgo Lagna, because Virgo rose from 08:26 to 10:41. To test your own window, make one kundli for the earliest possible time and one for the latest. If both show the same Lagna, your Lagna is known even without the exact minute.
How much does one hour change?
One hour of birth time changes more than most people expect. In the same test, we compared 10:00 with 11:00:
| Born 10:00 | Born 11:00 | |
|---|---|---|
| Lagna | Virgo | Libra |
| Moon position | 48.63° | 49.23° |
| Moon mahadasha left at birth | 3.53 years | 3.08 years |
| Next mahadasha (Mars) starts | 23 Feb 1994 | 13 Sep 1993 |
The Moon moved only 0.6° in that hour, but the next mahadasha started 163 days earlier. The dasha timetable is built from how far the Moon has travelled through its nakshatra, so every hour of error shifts the dasha dates by months.
What if you were born around sunrise?
If you were born at sunrise, your Lagna is the Sun’s own sign. At sunrise the Sun stands on the eastern horizon, and the Lagna is the point of the zodiac rising there. On the test day the Sun rose at Jaipur at 05:58, at 28° Cancer, and the Lagna at that minute was 27° Cancer. Leo began to rise at 06:11, just 13 minutes later. So a birth a little before or after sunrise can fall in the sign just before or just after the Sun’s sign. Sunset works the other way round: the Sun is then on the western horizon, so the Lagna at sunset is the sign opposite the Sun.
What can you still trust without the birth time?
Without the birth time you can still use:
- Your Moon sign (rashi), which is what most rashifal and Sade Sati readings use
- Your nakshatra, as long as it did not change on your birth day
- The signs of the Sun, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu
- Sade Sati status, which counts Saturn’s sign from your Moon sign
Treat these as unknown:
- Your Lagna and everything read from houses, such as the 7th house for marriage
- Exact dasha and antardasha dates
- Manglik dosha counted from the Lagna (the checks from the Moon and Venus still work)
- The Navamsa (D9) Lagna, which changes about every 13 minutes on average
How to check if your nakshatra changed that day
You can test it yourself in two minutes. Make two kundlis on the free kundli maker for your birth date: one at 00:01 and one at 23:59. If both show the same nakshatra, your nakshatra is certain even without the birth time. If they differ, the nakshatra changed during your birth day and you need at least a rough time, such as morning or evening. The test day is one of these days: on 15 August 1990 the Moon was in Rohini in the morning and in Mrigashira by night.
Do the same check for the Moon sign. On most days it stays the same; on the day the Moon changes sign, a rough time decides it.
Is kundli matching possible without the birth time?
Guna milan uses the Moon sign and the nakshatra of both people, so matching without birth times often gives the right score. The risk is the day the Moon changes nakshatra or sign: then the score can change. Run the check above for both people before trusting a match. You can then use the kundli matching tool with the times you know.
How to find your birth time
Before giving up on the time, try these sources:
- Birth certificate. Many Indian birth certificates record the time; some only record the date.
- Hospital records. Ask the hospital where you were born for the time entered in its birth register.
- Family records. A janam patri made soon after birth often states the time and the Lagna.
- Family members. Even “just before sunrise” or “after lunch” narrows the Lagna to two or three signs.
If none of these work, make the kundli with the time set to the middle of the most likely range, and read only the Moon-based parts of it.
Can an astrologer work out the birth time?
An astrologer can narrow it down with birth time rectification. The astrologer draws the kundli for each possible Lagna and checks which chart’s dasha timetable fits the dates of big life events, such as marriage, the birth of a child or a major change in work. The more exact the dates you bring, the narrower the result. Rectification gives a best estimate, not a record, so look for a written time first.
Quick answers
What time do I enter if I do not know it? Enter your best guess and treat the Lagna, houses and dasha dates as uncertain. The Moon sign, nakshatra and Sade Sati status will usually be right.
Why do some astrologers use 12:00 noon for an unknown time? Noon is the middle of the day, so the Moon’s real position is at most half a day’s travel away, about 6 to 8 degrees, and the Moon sign is right on most days. The Lagna of a noon chart is still a guess.
Is the Sun sign safe without the birth time? Yes, except on the one day each month when the Sun changes sign. A birth on that day needs at least a rough time.
Do twins born minutes apart have different kundlis? Slightly. The Lagna moves about one degree every four minutes, so twins usually share the Lagna sign but differ in its degree, and often in the Navamsa Lagna. Near the edge of a sign, a few minutes can even change the Lagna itself.
Can a name replace the birth time? No. A name only points to a name rashi through its first letter. See kundli by name.
